Today you don’t even need to own a measuring tape if you have a smartphone with Magic Plan installed. Just snap a few photos of each room inside your home from different angles and the app will spit out a floor plan with all the measurements included.

The Home Improvement Calculators app will help you with all the number crunching and once you’ve got the figures in front of you it will make life so much easier.

5 Android Food And Drink Apps That Will Help You Live A Healthier Life

Do you want to stay healthy for as long as possible before you start to head downhill? Unless you are unlucky and end up with a terrible disease the biggest thing stopping you from being healthy is your diet. It’s hard to tidy up your diet if you don’t know what you’re doing, so I want to share a few apps with you today that will give you the information you need to sort your diet out for good.

Food Substitutes

Some meals taste absolutely amazing and in a perfect world you would be able to eat them all the time, but unfortunately a lot of them will be unhealthy. That doesn’t mean to say there isn’t a way around it, but in order to eat those unhealthy meals you’ll need to replace some of the suspect ingredients with healthier options. The Food Substitutes app will help you do exactly that and when you look up a particular type of food it will give you a list of alternatives you can use instead.

Food Substitutes

Fooducate

The app might have a silly name, but it’s a lot better than other apps when it comes to picking out healthy food. People say a calorie is a calorie and most food trackers only take this into account, but Fooducate makes sure the food you put into your body is good for you. If you’re in the supermarket you’ll be able to scan a bar code and the app will tell you if any of the ingredients should be avoided. It will then show you healthier alternatives so you don’t miss out on anything.

Locavore

If you use the Locavore app you can ignore the supermarket altogether when it comes to picking up things like fresh produce. It will show you a map of all the farms and farmer’s markets in your local area where you can go to pick up delicious food. You will also get to see which foods are in-season along with the ones you can look forward to in a few months time. Once you’ve looked through the app there is a good chance you’ll discover lots of places you didn’t even know existed.

Locavore

SuperFood: Natural Nutrition

I’m sure you’ve heard ‘super foods’ thrown around a lot in the past, but maybe you’re unsure what it actually means. They usually give that name to any food that contains a particularly high amount of something that beats out all other foods similar to it. The SuperFood app will tell you what they are and it will give you lots of information about why you should be eating them. If you throw a few super foods in your diet it will definitely help you become a healthier individual.

Vivino Wine Scanner Pro

Drinking a few bottles of wine every night isn’t good for your health and I’m sure you know that, but drinking it in moderation is okay. Red wine is especially good for you and it’s full of antioxidants so you should have some in your wine racks. You still want to pick out the best red wines when you’re at the supermarket and it’s much easier if you have the Vivino Wine Scanner Pro app on your phone. Take a photo of random wines and you’ll receive a lot of info about each one so you can make the right choice.

Vivino Wine Scanner Pro

Take action before it’s too late

If you wait too long you might never change your diet and you will suffer the consequences further down the line, so I’d encourage you to do something about it now. Download any of these apps if you think they might help, but just make sure you do something as that is the most important thing.

Go On A Rampage With 5 Extremely Violent Fighting Games For Android

Hopefully you’re a peaceful person who doesn’t enjoy hurting other people, but sometimes it’s nice to let our anger out and you can easily do it through your phone these days. That is because there are lots of great fighting games being released on a constant basis and some of them are of such quality it won’t even feel like you’re playing them on your phone. Instead of testing them all out individually we’ll look at some of the cool ones you’d be mad to miss out on for a number of different reasons.

Fight Game: Heroes

Fight Club was one of the most popular films in the world when it came out and it developed a cult following. I’m sure there are groups of guys smashing each other to pieces right now in the back of random bars, but if you want to enjoy the excitement without getting black eyes you should download Fight Game: Heroes. It’s bare-knuckle fighting at its best and if you don’t want to fight against people in career mode you can fight against one of your friends the multiplayer option.

Fight Game Heroes

Real Steel

Real Steel is based on another movie except it was never as popular as Fight Club. That doesn’t matter because it’s completely different and there are no bare knuckles involved. You fight with robots and unless something has changed very recently they don’t even have any. The game is fun and when you’re starting out you will have a small selection of robots to fight with, but just like any other game on the market if you want to unleash some of those more exciting fighters you will need to earn them.

Blood & Glory: Legend

Do you want to kill people with scary weapons by smashing them over the head? In this game you play the part of a gladiator who is out for revenge and you need to kill everyone in your path until you can get your hands on the emperor. In order to do that you’ll need to work your way through a tournament until you reach the top of the ladder. One of the best features in the game is the swipe-based controls you use to control your gladiator because there is nothing worse than awkward gameplay.

Blood & Glory Legend

Fists For Fighting

If you attend boxing classes you’ll love to spend more time enjoying the sport. That becomes a problem when you only train a few times per week, but while you’re waiting around for your next class you can hone your skills using the Fists For Fighting app. It’s an amazing boxing arcade game that delivers a punch and you can take your fighter through a great tournament. The game is focused more towards action instead of strategy which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Punch Hero

Punch Hero is another great boxing game except this one isn’t to be taken as seriously. It’s more like a cartoon game, but it’s a suitable alternative for someone just looking to throw a few punches and beat other fighters up. You actually get to build your own fighter right from the start and as you progress through the game you will pick up money and experience points. These can then be used to turn your boxer into a better fighter and you can get lots of accessories for them.

Punch Hero

Did anything catch your eye?

We’ve talked about robots, gladiators, athletes, and normal guys who like to fight without any protection, so I’m sure there must be one or two you like the look of. The only real way you’ll know if you like them is by downloading them and testing each one out. If you enjoy fighting games in general there is a good chance you’ll love all of them.

Betamax or VHS? Which Upcoming Technologies Will Succeed and Which Will Fail?

Unfortunately for Betamax, the abandoned video storage format was not just abandoned, but was also doomed to become a symbol of all unsuccessful technology. Now whenever a piece of technology fails it goes the ‘way of the Betamax’. Just as the dodo has randomly become the front-man for all extinct animals…

Right now we live in a time when there are countless new technologies appearing every few minutes. The question is which of these we will be Betamaxes, and which of these will be the new VHS – the successful champion that succeeded where the Betamax failed?

Betamax or VHS

The Tech:Google Glass and Other AR Headsets

What It Is:Google Glass is a pair of glasses that can display a range of information overlayed on top of whatever you’re looking at. It takes voice commands and can also be controlled through taps and gestures on the side its body. This then allows you to film what you’re seeing, to take video calls while walking, to do quick Google searches and to see directions on the road in front of you. It’s real hands-free computing and in the future we might even be able to see details about a person or product by looking at them.

But there are problems with this particular solution. For one it looks goofy which is going to prevent a lot of people from wanting to use it. Then there are privacy issues (people have already been thrown out of cinemas for having them on) and there are problems in terms of the functionality too – such as the fact that it doesn’t have its own internet connection or a very long battery life. Augmented reality will be big in the future, but there’s a chance this isn’t the form it will take…

Google Glass and Other AR Headsets

Betamax or VHS?:Possible Betamax…

The Tech:The Oculus Rift and Other VR Headsets

What It Is:Another thing you wear on your head, only this time it’s the ‘Oculus Rift’ which is basically a virtual reality headset that immerses you in a 3D virtual environment complete with head-tracking and low-latency. The development kit is already available (and is very popular), but newer versions promise even better specs and features.

The initial vision for the Rift was as a piece of gaming hardware. Since then though it has grown tremendously and is now being considered for a million different uses in education, business, communication and more. In other news, the company was bought by Facebook and both Samsung and Sony announced they were creating competing devices. This one looks as though it’s here to stay!

the Oculus Rift and Other VR Headsets

Betamax or VHS?:VHS

The Tech:3D Printing

What It Is:3D printing has been around for a while now but has been a little slow to take off in a big way at least commercially. This is a piece of technology that allows any 3D object to be printed out in a range of materials, from plastics, to metals, to china even. Industrially this is used for far more impressive feats too: including such things as printing out whole satellites and computers. Woah.

Will it catch on at home? Almost certainly. The main issue up until now has been price point and that’s finally started coming down meaning. Combine it with a 3D scanner and you have some incredible possibilities – you could even use it to repair damaged ornaments!

3D Printing

Betamax or VHS?:VHS

There are many more technologies around the corner that are going to have to pass this test, from flexible screens, to motion gaming (the jury is still out on that one). It’s fascinating to watch and what makes it most interesting is the fact that we hold the power to decide. It’s in your hands, which tech do you deem worthy?

The Handyman Calculator app will strive to help you work out the exact measurements for everything so you never end up coloring outside the lines.

How to Create a Truly Paperless Home Office

The idea of a truly paperless office is a highly appealing one, and particularly around the home. Paper has a bad habit of looking highly disorganised and cluttered, and this often results in the office becoming overrun with piles of paper that make the whole room look untidy. Then when it’s time to find the documents you so diligently stored, all too often you’ll find it’s actually impossible to locate where you put them.

With a paperless office you would be able to keep everything much tidier and more organised, you’d have more room to store the things you actually cared about, and life would be much easier when you needed to move home. And it would be good for the environment too…

But how do you actually go about making an office paperless? Read on and we’ll look at some of the things you can do to make that a reality.

Truly Paperless Home Office

Stop Receiving Bills

If you’re still receiving bills and bank statements in the post, it’s probably because that’s the way you set up your account when you first signed your contract. These days many companies prefer to go paperless, and if you get in touch you can probably be transferred to the new system. Most banks for instance will these days allow you to access your statements online rather than having them e-mailed to you, and many energy providers and internet companies will send you your bills via e-mail. Switch to these systems and you can that way save yourself from piling up papers.

Buy a Scanner

You are still going to get some paper documents though, so you need to come up with a plan for what to do with those. To that end you should buy yourself a portable scanner. The best of these work by taking in items on a paper feed much as a printer takes in paper. They then scan each page automatically, front and back, and save them to your computer.

Some of these scanners will even use OCR (optical character recognition) in order to accurately group your papers and in order to let you convert them into Word Documents and other editable files.

Buy a Scanner

Send them to the Cloud

That’s a lot of documents you probably now have on your computer though, so you may want to consider using a cloud service to store them somewhere other than your hard drive. Use a cloud service and you can keep those documents saved off of your computer and access them from anywhere in the world. Use something like Evernote and you can even search the contents of your scanned files using the OCR again. This is a great demonstration of just how much more versatile going paperless makes you.

Get a Tablet

With one of the scanners described above you can even take the staples out of a magazine and then scan the whole thing into your computer as a PDF. But you’re hardly going to want to read a magazine on your desktop PC…

Which is where it comes in handy to have some kind of tablet or slate that you can put on your lap and swipe through at your leisure. Now you can keep your entire magazine collection on your tablet and read it on your way to work!

Get a Tablet

…With a Stylus

Want even more versatility? Then choose a tablet with a stylus (a proper digitizer) and you’ll then be able to write onto the documents to annotate them as well, meaning there’s nothing you can do with your hardcopy documents that you can’t now do with your digital copies.

Use a Shredder

Finally, once you’ve scanned in all your documents you will need to get rid of the originals in order to make it easier for your moving companies. Get a shredder that works quickly so that you’re likely to use it, and then just run each sheet through there after you’ve scanned it. Keeping a paper tray for your papers in waiting is also a good move.

5 Easy Ways To Integrate Social Media Into The Design Of Your Website

These days you must take social media into consideration when you’re designing your website because it’s going to drive a lot of traffic as your business grows. To neglect it means throwing money away, but if you want to use it to your advantage there are still a few things you need to know. Take a look at some of these great ways to integrate social media into your design effectively to guarantee you better results.

Integrate Social Media

Use scrolling buttons

There are lots of different areas you can place your social share buttons, but one place you must have them is at the side of your content. It means you’ll be able to set them to scroll as your visitors are making their way down the page and when the buttons are in their face 100% of the time it’s easy for them to move their mouse across to click on one or two of them. Nobody is going to go searching for your buttons, so you have to have them on display at all times.

After your content

Just because you have scrolling social media buttons at the side of your content it doesn’t mean you don’t need them anywhere else on your site. One area you must include them is straight below the content because if they love your article they’ll be excited and as soon as they finish reading something they will look down and see your Twitter share button staring them in the face. If you don’t place any below your content you’re only throwing away potential free traffic.

scrolling social media buttons

Build up your reputation

Some people are still afraid to hand over their money to random websites because there are millions of scammers out there, so you want to prove to your audience you’re a real person. You can do this using social media if you already have quite a large following. Stick a Facebook widget in your sidebar asking people to like your page and if they see you already have thousands of followers you’ll automatically be more trustworthy, but this tactic can easily backfire if you only have a few followers.

Target the right pages

You don’t need to place sharing buttons on every page because they won’t be needed. Nobody is going to share your contact page with anyone. If you have a blog you’ll definitely want to include them on each of your posts because it’s an easy way to drive free traffic back to your site. Stick them on product pages too because you can’t have enough visitors hitting your money pages and since the link they clicked through was most likely posted by a friend they’ll be more likely to get their card out.

Target the right pages

You must choose wisely

Just because you can throw dozens of different social media buttons onto your site it doesn’t mean you should do so. There is a huge chance most of them will never be clicked, so when you think about it they’re just wasting valuable real estate and distracting your visitors. If you sell an outdoor security camera do you think people will want to share your photos on Pinterest? Think wisely and only include the buttons you think people in your target market will actually click on.

You can’t ignore them

Social media isn’t going anywhere and you must utilize it if you want to keep up with your competition. Luckily everything we’ve spoken about today won’t be hard to set up and over the next few months or years you’ll definitely see results by simply making a few easy changes now. Even if you’re not active on social media it doesn’t mean you don’t want your visitors to promote your content for you.

5 Future Car Technologies That Our Next Generation Can Enjoy

Science and technology progresses at a very rapid pace, as you probably have already seen already. Merely 10 years ago, we didn’t have smartphones, powerful computers and all the gadgets which make our life easier and better these days. If huge leaps in technological advances can be made in only 10 years, it is only normal to ask ourselves what can happen in the next 10 years. What technologies and improvements are waiting for us to try and explore in the upcoming years?

Well, it is hard to predict the future accurately, but when it comes to cars and vehicles, there are a couple of concepts which are very likely to be found in the cars that our kids will drive in the future. Let’s get acquainted with some top future car technologies and see how smart they can be!

Future Car Technologies

Communicating vehicles

Yes, this can be entirely true and no, cars won’t speak between them about politics and the latest soaps on television. This communication is much more different and it is focused in order to keep a driver safe on the road. For example, let’s say that you are tired, sleepy and by accident, you don’t actually see the car in front of you which has stopped already. In a matter of seconds, you are about to crash into it, but thanks to the V2V technology, this unfortunate event can be prevented.

V2V means vehicle-to-vehicle communication and it is basically some sort of constant synchronizing between two vehicles on the road. The V2V system can automatically apply the brakes for you and the likelihood of an accident is greatly reduced. This smart technology is still tested nowadays and in the future it can save a lot of lives.

Self-driving cars

Although this might sound like a scenario from the movie “I, Robot”, self-driving cars will become a day-to-day reality in the near future. Actually, big car companies already test self-driving cars and they design a plethora of systems and algorithms which will allow these cars to identify various types of roads, the other vehicles on the road, traffic signs, calculate alternate routes, avoid traffic jams and even let pedestrians pass by. Such an amazing technology can actually reduce the amount of accidents which happen on highways in the entire world and which are mostly caused by human error. Until then, let’s enjoy thinking of that moment when we will get in a futuristic vehicle and tell it “Computer, to the casino, please!”

Self driving cars

Intelligent dashboards

Another great technology which future cars can bring is actually called Augmented Reality Dashboards. Some of the today’s modern cars display your speed on your windshield; the future cars will be able to display not only that, but also an entire array of helpful information about the surrounding objects and the environment. Augmented Reality Dashboards can actually tell you the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, and display important GPS information as well as much more other interesting details.

Stopping airbags

These days, you can find airbags which can protect your head, your knees, your shoulders, you name it. This piece of technology invented by Mercedes has been very helpful in minimizing the injuries of the driver and passengers during a car collision. However, the same car company develops an enhanced version of these airbags, ones that can be placed under the vehicle and which can deploy in order to stop a car. These airbags feature a very adherent coating which, combined with the braking power, can stop a vehicle before hitting the ditch, a tree or another car.

Body panels that store energy

In the upcoming decades, it is predicted that more than half of the vehicles in use in the entire world will be hybrids. This is very convenient for the environment and for the health of the planet. However, hybrid cars which rely on batteries, solar panels, etc have different disadvantages. For example, it can take a very long period of time in order to fully charge the hundreds of small batteries in a hybrid car. This can be very stressful if you are late for a meeting.

hybrid car

That is why the experts are developing body panels which can accumulate and store energy for later use. These panels are also lighter and they will reduce the energy consumption of a certain vehicle. Although this technology is still in its early stages, it is very likely that it will allow us in the future to have a comfortable and safe trip to a particular destination without harming our planet that much!

Great Apps to Help With Your Interior Design

Designing a layout for a room is one part creative license and one part careful planning. To get the most from your rooms you need to consider a number of technical aspects such as the light coming in and the shape of the layout, while at the same time finding a way to inject some personality into your concepts. If that sounds a little tricky though don’t worry – with a smartphone, help is very much at hand!

Interior Design

PhotoMeasures:

PhotoMeasures is a useful interior design app for saving measurements and other notes right onto snapshots of your rooms. It means you won’t arrive back home from Ikea only to realise that your perfect new item is the wrong shape and also gives you all your dimensions alongside a reminder of your style and color schemes so that you can make decisions quickly with all the available information. A limitation is that PhotoMeasures doesn’t give a full detailed floor-plan like some other applications with a top-down view, but this is still a fantastic app for an interior designer or house-proud homeowner that’s quick and intuitive to use and immensely useful.

Phaidon Design Classics:

This is a rather expensive app for iPad that gives you access to 1,000 classic design texts. In here you’ll find in-depth topics of discussion fit for a university lecture hall as well as plenty of quick-tips for the novice. It’s not terribly welcoming in its design though and probably isn’t recommended unless you’re a professional. Even then the price point is rather steep…

Pinterest:

Pinterest is a surprisingly useful social network and mobile app for ‘pinning’ inspiring images and text from the community to curate your own mood board. It achieves this by allowing you to search and share inspiration with a huge community. It enables you to easily organise and share your ideas and is a highly hands-on way to think about a design. The boards can be as specific or as general as you like, or you can make them gradually more specific as you narrow down your decisions.

For example then, if you were coming up with a new layout for your living room using Pinterest, you might first start out by looking for ‘living room ideas’. Here you might pin images of living rooms you liked the looks of as well as items for the living room or specific ideas relating to the design. Perhaps after pinning a few you notice that the rooms you like the most are blue and modern. This then allows you to narrow your search to ‘modern blue furniture’ and to start gathering items you like the looks of. In some cases you’ll be able to follow those links to purchase the items online, but in other cases you can use the images just to guide your purchasing decisions on a trip to Ikea.

Overall Pinterest is an excellent social mobile app for any house-proud homeowner, but can also be useful for wedding planning and all kinds of other creative endeavours.

Houzz:

If you find Pinterest a bit overwhelming at first, then you can use ‘Houzz’ for Android and iOS to search specifically through images of rooms designed to inspire. The app is free and has helped many others to make design decisions before you.

Sun Seeker:

This app has nothing to do with the boats. And is also a little steep for casual use. Nevertheless though it’s still a highly useful piece of software that determines the amount of natural light available in any room at given times using the GPS in your smartphone. This is pretty handy if you want to map out where to place your furniture to benefit from the sun’s rays and even more so if you are thinking of putting in new windows and doors in which case it can show you where the most effective location would be.

Netflix:

And finally…Netflix. It may not have much to do with interior design, but if you’re going to be spending hours cleaning your rooms and moving furniture around then you’re going to need something to entertain you. And Netflix is one of the best apps for doing just that!
